Tips for completing the XCOM 2 game. Hacking

The basics

One of the novelties introduced in the second part of the XCOM franchise, at the same time, is one of the most important game mechanics that you will use while on the battlefield. Hacking allows you to gain access to a wide range of things that you usually miss - additional resources, the acquisition of random alien objects on the map, a huge buff for your soldiers or the opportunity to seize control of enemy units.

Hacking is available to all classes of soldiers, but in this case it is strictly limited, allowing most of them to hack objects related only to missions (for example, data terminals). This ability is much more versatile when used by a Specialist class soldier, who can use it on a large number of objects, such as observation towers, as well as on enemy mechanized units (provided that the soldier has the necessary ability). Moreover, soldiers of this class can use their GREMLIN drone to hack from a great distance, whereas other classes must stand next to the object you want them to interact with.

You have to keep a few things in mind when hacking:

Hacking will not break the cover-up, provided that you have hacked the object. The only exception to this rule is when you violate the security of a key, mission-specific facility, such as defusing a bomb on a cargo that will immediately alert enemies of your presence.

Starting the hacking process, but not completing it (when you want to check what the results of a successful hacking can give), is not worth the action point. You can perform this maneuver as many times as you want.

You can hack enemy mechanized units without breaking cover if you refrain from attacking with the unit you have just gained control of.

Skulljack, apart from a good Intel source, is an ideal weapon against your enemies - the soldier on whom it is used will always die later, regardless of the result of the hacking process.

Don't forget to refrain from using Skulljack on one of the enemies, Codex. Using a tool for this very specific enemy will summon an Avatar that will do your team's short work if they are not properly equipped. The use of Skulljack in the Codex is required as part of one of the goals related to the story, so you should wait before using it until you achieve that goal to move the story forward.

Advantages and disadvantages of hacking

The benefits of a successful hack vary greatly depending on the enemy/facility on which the hacking process was used. In the case of hacking mechanized enemies (MEC, Sectopods, Andromedon's "second form"), it is "limited" to two possibilities - you can either stun the target for two rounds (the simpler option), or seize control of the enemy for several rounds (the more difficult option). To do this, you will need the ability of a Haywire protocol specialist.

It is many times more interesting to hack surveillance towers, terminals or attack the enemy with Skulljack - there are several options to choose from. They vary in difficulty, the ones that affect your entire team are the most difficult to accomplish - if one soldier gets a positive effect, hacking will be relatively easy, but if you want to get the same effect on the whole squad, you'll need a soldier with a huge amount of HACK to make it happen.
